the beginning 🧼

Our 100+ Year Story

In 1908 two soap makers from Denmark started Red Star with a single product- a cleaning paste they manufactured and distributed (by push bikes!) to local factories, shops, and homes. This is a quintessential Aussie story, of having a go and offering a beautifully crafted product to the community.

How it started.

1908 — In 1908, Peter Petersen and Peter Mogusen started Red Star Cleaner in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy. Soap-makers from Denmark, they brought to Australia their special formulation for an all-natural, multi-use, cleaning paste to pedal to the factories across the city.

1936 — The Next Chapter

When Peter and Peter retired in 1936, they passed Red Star on to Charlie Goodall, a local salesman who had been supplying them with bentonite clay, wood rosin, and pumice.

Charlie wasn’t just familiar with the formula, he believed in it. He took over the business, and added something of his own: eucalyptus oil. Drawn to its natural deodorising and sanitising power, Charlie refined the recipe, building a cleaner people trusted in homes, sheds, and laundries across Victoria.

For the next 90 years, Red Star stayed in the family, cared for by Charlie’s wife Adele, his son Leigh, and his granddaughter Kerrie.

2024 — Red Star Reborn

Still small-batch. Still proudly Victorian. But reimagined for a new generation of clean.
